Notes for August Joseph Schroeder |
August had been a close friend of Willie Richter, and had loaded and fired the gun that exploded and killed Willie on New Year's Eve at the turn of the century. The accident blew off one of August's thumbs. August often helped Alice Richter with handyman jobs, especially after Robert lost his sight in one eye. Roland always enjoyed relating an incident he witnessed there: The roof had been leaking, and August had tried to repair it. At the next rain it began to leak again. August said, "I guess I'll go up and stuff some more filling into the cracks." His mother-in-law Alice said to the others, "Why don't we just stuff August in the cracks?" |
