Notes for Emmet A. Beard
"Beard" was born in Oklahoma in 1919. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941, "one month ahead of the draft board." He spent his military career in the Supply Corps. In 1943 he was sent to Hondo to help open the Air Base there. He met Mimmi Doyle at a dance at Quihi. After he learned that the handsome Navy officer with her was her brother, they began to date, and were married in September, 1944. After his discharge, Beard worked for the Gary Aircraft Corporation in Hondo. He then went to barber school. In 1951 he was called back to active duty in Georgia for a time. Beard was a barber for 20 years, and then worked for the Civil Service. Beard and Mimmi loved to tell jokes. They enjoyed square dancing, and became square dance teaachers. They also liked to take camping trips. Surrounded by famiy and friends, they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in Septmeber, 1994. For many years Beard joined Mimmi as a faithful caregiver and companion for Mimmi's parents. He continues to live in Hondo.
