Notes for Julia Dale (Judy) Wahler | Judy was born in a small town in Texas in 1919. She met Hugo at Texas A & I, where both were students, and they married in the fall of 1942 during Hugo's shore leave. Judy went to San Francisco in 1943 when Hugo shipped out to the Pacific. She stayed there and worked for the Victory Manpower Campaign, living for a time with Evy and Roland. Hugo wrote her letters daily, but they only arrived sporadically in large packets. Every night Judy would rush home from work, hoping for mail from Hugo. Roland, always a tease, liked to intercept her packet of letters and to string them one by one on the clothesline extending from the second story of their flat, so Judy had to reel them in. Judy returned to Texas before the war ended. The family settled in Austin in 1955. Later in life Hugo and Judy spent part of the year at their cabin in Lake Tahoe, which allowed them to be near their children and grandchildren on the West Coast. Since Hugo's death, Judy has been living with her daughters. |
