Notes for Hugo Alfred Schweers Jr. | Hugo grew up in Hondo and attended Hondo High School, where he played football. He met Judy at Texas A & I, where both were students. During World War II he served in the Navy, volunteering for hazardous duty in the newly formed bomb disposal unit. He was Bomb Disposal Officer and Division Officer aboard the battleship USS Indiana (deployed in the Pacific Theater), earning one silver and four bronze stars. He served in the Naval Reserve as Commanding Officer of Naval Ordinance Companies in Oklahoma City and Austin, and retired in 1978 with the rank of Captain. Hugo's civilian career was with the Bureau of Reclamation, where he planned irrigation and municipal and industrial water supply projects in a number of states. The family settled in Austin in 1955. Later in life Hugo became a great fan of the Stanford football team. He and Judy bought a cabin at Lake Tahoe, which allowed them to be near their children and grandchildren on the West Coast. Hugo died in 2005 of complications from a fall. |
