Johanna loved the land and coaxed a bumper crop from her rented field that first year in Texas. With the proceeds from her two bales of cotton, she and Gottlob were able to buy their small farm. The family subsisted on turnips one year after a drought. Johanna was a tireless worker who had a winsome way of encouraging her eight children to follow her lead.
