Notes for Carl Gottlob Wiederaenders | Gottlob was a journeyman cooper in Mittelhaide before leaving Saxony. Upon arriving in Texas, he could not find employment in Galveston. In Houston, he pledged a year’s labor to a plantation owner in exchange for passage to Round Top, food and shelter for his family, and a horse and cow at the end of the year. After working for another farmer for a year, he and Johanna saved enough to buy a small farm in the Rabbs Creek Community near Serbin, Texas. They built a log cabin in 1857. Carl plied his trade as a cooper and wheelwright while Johanna managed the farm. |
