Notes for Gertrude von Otto | Gertrude᾿s father was a Lutheran pastor who went to Russia to organize a congregation for the German people who had settled there at the invitation of the Russian government. When her family moved to Russia, Gertrude decided to go to America instead with a girlfriend. She worked as an assistant housekeeper at Wartburg Seminary in St. Sebald, Iowa, where she met Emil. Gerturde met the many challenges of her pioneer life and her role as a pastor’s wife. She contracted tuberculosis while carrying her youngest child, and died just months after his birth.
