After the Civil War he went to Iowa to finish his studies at Wartburg Theological Seminary. His first congregation was in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin (1868 - 1872). He later served churches in Jubilee, Iowa, Scotland, South Dakota, and Gothenburg, Nebraska. During his pastorate in Prairie du Chien, Emil confirmed all five of the famous Ringling brothers.
