August emigrated in 1854 with his familiy aboard the Salucia. He narrowly escaped being killed by Comanches in 1865 near the Hondo River, where he was hunting stray oxen with three other young men, George Miller, Herbert Weynand, Jr., and Jacob Sauter. The Comanches killed Miller and captured Weynand.
