Notes for Zelda Irene Schweers | Zelda was born in Hondo, Texas on February 19, 1921, the third of five children. During childhood she survived several serious illnesses. She attended Trinity College in San Antonio for one year. During World War II she worked as a secretary at the Hondo Airbase. While recovering from jaundice in 1945, she was advised to seek a change of climate, so she moved to San Francisco, living with Evy and Roland. She worked at a downtown bank, where she met Tom Wagoner. After their marriage in 1946 the couple lived on Haight Street near Golden Gate Park. Tommy left the marriage in 1949 and Zelda moved back to Hondo, working in city administration there. She met Jesse Stephens, a land surveyor whose company was working in Hondo, at a cafe where Zelda would go dancing with her girlfriend. They married in 1954. In 1968 they moved to San Antonio, where Zelda worked for a doctor's office and then at Alexander & Alexander Insurance Agency, where she was a claims supervisor for 21 years. In 1976 she lost Jesse to cancer. After retiring, Zelda continued to live in San Antonio and enjoy the company of her children and grandchildren. She died in 2006. |
