Notes for Eleanor Augusta Wiederanders | Born in a small town in South Dakota in 1913, Eleanor was delivered by her paternal aunt and namesake Eleonore, a well-respected RN in her hometown. She attended a one-room elementary school in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Waite High School in Clinton, Iowa. In 1932 she earned her B.A. in the Classics from Wartburg College in Clinton, Iowa, where she met Clarence (Junie). She studied Greek, among other subjects. Professor Fred Schoenbohm recalled that she was one of the brightest students he had ever had. After graduation Eleanor taught school. She and Junie married in 1939, and moved to Yorktown where he had his first parish. Eleanor and Clarence cared for a foster child, John Brant, whom they would have liked to adopt. They subsequently adopted Marian in 1947 and Paul in 1949. In 1949 the family settled in Benson, Illinois. Eleanor taught Latin and English — her favorite subjects — at the high school in nearby Flanagan. After 31 years in Benson, the couple moved to Merrimac, Wisconsin in 1980. Eleanor loved to read. After Junie's death in 1994, she continued to live on her own until developing Alzheimer's Disease. She died in 2006. |
