Roads in Texas were little more than rutted tracks, dusty in the summer and impassable when wet and muddy. The sturdy Mexican oxcarts in common use were built entirely of wood and fastened by wooden pins and rawhide thongs. Often the wheels stood taller than a man. The bed was usually 15 feet long.
