Alwin Sörgel spent less than two years in Texas, during which time he tried his hand at independent farming and then became employed by the Society. During this time he wrote Für Auswanderungslustige! (For Prospective Emigrants), published as a series of letters to a Leipzig newspaper, and Neueste Nachrichten aus Texas, (Latest News from Texas), which contained a critique of the Society and an appeal for greater financial support from the German princes.
