Sam Houston (1793-1863) led the Battle of San Jacinto to secure Texas’ independence from Mexico. As President of the Republic, he supported annexation by the United States. When the State of Texas seceded from the Union in 1861, Houston refused to swear allegiance to the Confederacy and was removed from the office of governor.
