The prince had a warehouse and structures for temporary shelter built at Carlshafen, which became the “welcome center” for Society immigrants to Texas. The prince’s name for the port did not stick. Instead it came to be known as Indianola, after its earlier name: Indian Point. For three decades, thousands of immigrants landed here to begin their trek inland. Indianola became a major port, second only to Galveston. It was destroyed by a hurricane in 1875.
