The German Protestant Church was built in January 1846 with help from its members, who hauled cedar logs for the structure and constructed the clay and caliche floor. The building’s Zwiebelturm (onion tower) was characteristic of churches in the old country. The building also served as the school. Prior to the church’s construction, services had been held under the elms near Sophienburg Hill from the earliest days of the colony. Courtesy Sophienburg Museum.
