The Society hired Dr. Theodor Koester (1817-1877) as its physician in Germany. He came to Texas aboard the first immigrant ship, the Johann Dethardt. Koester was severely criticized by several colonists for refusing to treat those in need, vulgarity, and sexual harrassment. He had a contentious relationship with his fellow Verein officers, even fighting a duel with the Treasurer, von Coll. He came in for scathing criticism from Prince Solms, who relieved him of his duties at one point. However, the doctor went on to have a long career in New Braunfels in his combined roles as physician, apothecary, and baker. Image courtesy Sophienburg Museum Archives.
