The hill country around New Braunfels was a wilderness, beautiful and even mythic in nature to many German immigrants. It exerted a strong pull on those who were not yet ready to settle down. Hermann Lungkwitz drew and painted many landscapes of Texas after emigrating from Saxony in 1852.
